Finding your way

The Seine splits Paris into the Right Bank and the Left Bank; the Île de la Cité and Île Saint-Louis are its heart. The 20 arrondissements spiral out from the 1st, around the Louvre. The centre is easy to explore on foot.

Getting around

Metro, RER, trams and buses make up the Île-de-France Mobilités network, run in Paris by the RATP. Vélib’ bike sharing covers the whole city. Tickets and fares: iledefrance-mobilites.fr.

Getting there

Two airports, Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Paris-Orly. The main stations (Nord, Est, Lyon, Austerlitz, Montparnasse, Saint-Lazare) are linked to the metro.

Visiting

The busiest sites often require booking ahead: check hours, prices and conditions on each venue’s official website, listed on its page.

Emergencies

European emergency number: 112.
